From 1851 to 1901, Rathven appears to have been enumerated like any other parish, that is with a single sequence of ED numbers, starting from 1. But for some reason, this pattern was not followed for the 1841 Census. Instead, the parish is in effect subdivided into 5 smaller units, numbered separately, and, as a result, there are duplicated ED numbers. The following table links the ambiguous ED numbers to the "Folio Numbers" * which are unique, and which are used in the "Locations" file for Rathven to refer to the 1841 Census. References to the 1851, 1861 and 1881 Census use the more usual "ED" numbers.
ED Description ED Number Folio Number Buckie 'quoad sacra' 1 1 ditto 2 2 ditto 3 3 ditto 4 4 ditto 5 5 ditto 6 6 Rathven proper 1 7 ditto 2 8 ditto 3 9 Findochty 1 10 Portessie & Peterhythe 1 11 Portknockie / Cullen 'quoad sacra' 4 ** 12 ditto 5 13 ditto 6 14 ditto 7 15 ditto 8 16 * Note that there is actually no such heading as "Folio" to be found anywhere on the Census films, but the terminology is widely used to refer to the "running numbers" which are added to the outside cover of each Enumeration Book, and which will be found on the Census microfilm on the frame preceding the data for each ED.
** The odd ED number sequence for Portknockie/Cullen QS can be explained by the fact that the Provost of Cullen attempted a "land grab", claiming that the area lay under his civil jurisdiction (which it did not). He had his fingers rapped, and the relevant EDs were "repatriated" to Rathven, but as every page already carried the "Cullen ED number", these were left unchanged.
