Seemingly lost in wooded countryside, the church of San Pietro is actually a mere stone's throw from the thundering traffic of the Via Flaminia, on the south-eastern outskirts of Spoleto, in southern Umbria.
Having undergone various phases of destruction and re-building over the centuries, the church that we see today has the general appearance of a building of the 17th or 18th centuries, but it incorporates significant elements of a Romanesque facade dating from the late 1200s, with a wealth of figurative carving, carrying moral messages.
